Which book students are supposed to read for summer reading homework depends on their grade and the English course they are taking. Some of the required titles are A Thousand Splendid Suns, Outliers, The Mayor of Casterbridge and The Pact.

All students who plan to attend Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology in the fall have summer reading homework.

The assignments vary by grade level and English course.

Students are expected to get a copy of the book and be prepared to write an essay about the book when school opens in the fall.

“I’ll read five minutes a day” over the summer, said freshman Maya Robertson.

Sophomore DeAnna Miree said she would take a different approach to completing her summer homework. She said she would do all of her reading the last week of summer so the material was still fresh in her mind.

Junior Skylar Coulter said she plans to read 20 minutes a day over the summer to get her summer reading homework done.
