The Southfield Jay

About

The Southfield Jay has been publishing in print for  63 years and online for 18 years. This is its last year publishing as The Southfield Jay due to the planned merger of Southfield High School with Southfield-Lathrup High School in the fall of 2016. The merged school will have a new name: Southfield High School for The Arts and Technology. It will also have a new mascot: The Warriors, so the current name of The Southfield Jay (named after the Blue Jay mascot) will no longer fit. Until the merge, we remain The Southfield Jay.

The Jay exists as a limited open forum of public expression. It serves the student body of Southfield High School, in Southfield, Mich., and will not function as an instrument of any individual.

All information printed in The Jay will be factually correct and unbiased in content. It will not knowingly be published if it is injurious to a person’s reputation or constitutes libel.

The Jay publishes without prior review by school administration. It strives to present the widest possible scope of information pertaining to Southfield High School (SHS) while ensuring that articles are of interest to a significant segment of the student population.

The Jay will publish both brief and in-depth stories highlighting positive and negative aspects relating to SHS in hopes of enhancing the readers’ understanding of important and timely issues and events.

The opinions expressed in unsigned editorials are those of the paper’s staff and not necessarily those of the school administrators or The Board of Education. Signed opinion pieces represent the opinion of the writer.

Editorials in The Jay will be a forum for honest opinion and will not be influenced by any outside powers, including the faculty or the administration.

Comments on stories and letters to the editor are encouraged and might be edited for appropriateness. They must be signed and must abide by the same stated standards regarding other Jay articles.
