Southfield High junior Marzell Patterson competes in the high jump. In boys track, Southfield High School easily dominated Southfield-Lathrup i their last matchup, 82-51.

In the final assessment, Southfield High won the last sports battles against its cross-town rival Southfield-Lathrup in all sports except softball, baseball and girls basketball. The two schools are merging in September, so the rivalry will be officially dead. Forever.

FOOTBALL – SHS WINS
The last Southfield High versus Southfield-Lathrup varsity football game was in 2013, and Southfield High won the game 23-6. “The last time the school on 12 Mile beat Southfield High School in football was in 2003,” said Assistant Principal Vernon Burden, who is an alumnus of Southfield High and a former member of the Blue Jay Varsity Football team.

BOYS BASKETBALL – SHS WINS
The Southfield High School Boys Varsity Basketball team faced Southfield-Lathrup in the final battle in 2015, dominating the game and winning the eternal bragging rights with the score of 82-77. “That was personally my best game of the season, and it is a game that I will remember and carry with me forever,” said senior varsity player Dean Wagner.

GIRLS BASKETBALL – S-L WINS
The final Southfield High School versus Southfield-Lathrup Girls Varsity Basketball battle was at the District Championship in 2015. The Southfield-Lathrup Chargers won by a landslide with a score of 55-39. Junior Tyler Washington said, “I wish we could have done better, but when this school year is over, I will have to let it go, and focus on coming together and working hard again.”

WRESTLING – SHS WINS
The wrestling teams last faced off in 2011, with Southfield High winning the match 76-9. “I’ve never lost to them as a coach, and I’ve been coaching since 2005,” said Assistant Principal Vernon Burden. “I don’t think they’ve won since (Tim) Conley took over, which was in 1998, which lead to them dismantling it.”

GIRLS GOLF – SHS WINS
SHS earned eternal bragging rights in the final tournament against S-L, which was in 2010 with a score of 220-244. “Lathrup hasn’t had a girls golf team in four years,” said Blue Jays Girls Golf Coach Stephen Sharp. So they never had a rematch.
BOYS GOLF – SHS WINS
In the final tournament of Southfield High v. Southfield Lathrup. Southfield High won the eternal bragging right in 2012 with a score of 210-225. “Lathrup cut there golf team a long time ago,” said Coach Milton Jones.

GIRLS TENNIS – SHS WINS
The Lady Jays tennis team defeated the Lathrup Chargers in their the final match this 2016 season with a score of 5-4. Senior Teka Richardson said, “I feel kind of good about winning, actually, because Lathrup likes to hold stuff over our heads, so it’s great that we won the final match”

BOYS TENNIS – SHS WINS
The final standoff between Southfield High School and Southfield-Lathrup ended with Southfield High School coming out on top, 6-2 , and earning eternal bragging rights. The last match between the teams was in the fall of 2015. Senior Sherrod Shreve said, “I realized that it was our last match as Southfield High School, which made me sad, but the fact that we won, made me happy. “

BASEBALL – S-L WINS
The Chargers Boys Varsity Baseball team dominated the Blue Jays 13-1 in their final game this 2016 season. ”I was not happy with the loss, but I am looking forward to all the talent we will have with Lathrup coming in,” said sophomore Jaysen Lipsey.

SOFTBALL – S-L WINS
In their final softball matchup, which was this Spring of 2016, Southfield-Lathrup narrowly defeated Southfield High with a score of 14-12. Junior player Shelby Moore said, “I think we could have done a lot better. It will be a great challenge combining with Lathrup next year, but I still plan to play, of course. “

GIRLS TRACK – SHS WINS
By a lopsided score of 124-5, the SHS Lady Jays dominated their final track meet with the Southfield-Lathrup Lady Chargers. Senior Paige O’Neal said, “It wasn’t a real competition; we have better athletes. It just shows that we were more prepared.”

BOYS TRACK – SHS WINS
SHS won its final track meet against S-L in 2016 with a score of 82-51. Delan Wynn said, “Honestly, it felt great winning the last meet. We were able to see what talent they had left over there. In the end, we have better athletes and a great track team.”
