Black History is the focus of a program scheduled for Feb. 25 at Southfield High School’s auditorium.

Freshmen and sophomores will be excused from their sixth hour classes after attendance to see the show. Seniors and juniors will be released from seventh hour after attendance to see the program.

The event is co-sponsored by English teacher Virna Hobbs-Calhoun and accompanist Devon Cadwell. The narrator of the event will be senior William Flood.

The program will feature black artists in the Southfield district, with presentations about Harlem Renaissance writers and performances by the Southfield High School Marching Band, the Poetry Club, the Drama Club and the Southfield High School Choir.

Senior Taylor Haywood plans to perform a modern dance, and junor Mariya Calhoun has planned a hip hop number.

“It’s a shame that we haven’t had a black history program in so long,” said Hobbs-Calhoun.

Pianist Cadwell, who is a new staff member this year, suggested having a Black History program.

Poetry Club President Kee’nan Haggen said he helped the teachers plan the program.

 “I want students to learn more about African American history because we don’t talk about it often in our classes,” Haggen said.

Junior Justin Hicks is preparing a piano solo for the program. “ I’m very confident about my solo, but I’m also happy that the kids from our school can sit and enjoy the entertainment of our history as a whole.”
