College Fair Matches Students, Colleges
Forty-eight colleges were represented at Southfield High School’s college fair held Oct. 16 in the field house.
Seniors, juniors and sophomores were excused from a morning class to meet with representatives from schools such as Michigan State University, The University of Michigan, Wayne State, Clark Atlanta and Lawrence Technological University.
Senior Jazzmyn Stewart said she was mainly interested in talking to schools based in Michigan “I’m especially interested in talking to U of M and MSU. I want to know their tuition prices and if they have a baking and pastry arts class,” said Stewart, age 17.
Students said the college fair gave them access to knowledge regarding the colleges. “I feel that the college fair is very beneficial especially to seniors who are looking to apply soon,” said senior Paris White.
“I loved the college fair,” said senior Kaleb Baker. “ The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that all the colleges didn’t show up.”
Southfield High was expecting 76 colleges. Although all the colleges didn’t attend, Southfield was still able to bring in some big name colleges, including Western Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University, and specialty colleges, such as Dorsey School.
The college fair was organized by Career Center staff members Catherine Miller and Dr. Linda Brown, along with Counselor Tom Holliday. It is an annual event that occurs each October.
