Blue Jays Welcome New Staff Members

This year Southfield High is adding five new staff members to the SHS crew. They are Chantay Williams (support staff), Kathryn Walker (Librarian) David Shaw (Spanish), Erin Reynoso (Spanish) and Christopher Kuhn (Band/Vocal Music).
The position for a physics teacher is still open, according to Craig Bonnington, Science Department chair. It was vacated by Stacey Nunley, who transferred to Birney Middle School to teach science.
Here’s a rundown on the new faces at Southfield High:
KATHRYN WALKER
Walker says she has wanted to come back to working in a high school and has been working in the district for the past 15 years, at Kennedy, Stevenson and Leonard elementary schools, and five years at Birney K-8 School. She also worked at Royal Oak Dondero for one year.
Her hobbies include shopping, gardening, interior decorating, traveling and reading.
Fun Fact: She grew up in Detroit but has lived in Atlanta, New York, Washington D.C., and Texas.
DAVID SHAW
“I grew up in Southfield, went to Lathrup (High School) and still live in Southfield. I like contributing to the community and education,” Shaw says.
Shaw speaks two languages, – English and Spanish.
He learned his Spanish by living in Guatemala and having a Mexican wife with whom he speaks Spanish at home.
His interests include traveling, skiing, and listening to music.
Fun fact: He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala.
ERIN REYNOSO
Reynoso speaks a total of three languages: English, French and Spanish. She studied in Spain for a semester in college.
She says she decided to be a Blue Jay because she wanted to work with more mature students after teaching in a middle school setting.
Fun fact: “I once got hypothermia while camping in the snow,” says Reynoso.
CHRISTOPHER KUHN
Kuhn has been in the music field for five years. He previously worked in Mount Morris, Mich, a very small school district. “This school has a great program and high reputation for music,” says Kuhn.
His hobbies are golfing, watching baseball, and spending time with the family.
Fun fact: He once played saxophone in Carnegie Hall.
CHANTAY WILLIAMS
Williams says she’s always wanted to work in the SPS district. She was ecstatic when the position opened up and being here for the time she has, she’s been having a good experience, she says.
On her free time she scrapbooks. She also enjoys going to the movies and trying new restaurants.
Fun Fact: She used to live in Alaska.
