Snow Days Complicate School Matters

While many students rejoiced in bad weather that caused seven snow days for Southfield High this year, others say they were annoyed by the time off.

Girls Basketball Coach Jamie Glinz said that because of the snow days, he had to reschedule practices and games. “Prior to the interruption of the snow days, the team had three weeks to complete 10 games.”  Because the school had so many snow days, the team averaged three games a week at the end of the season.

The crammed game schedules put a lot of stress on teams and  coaches because having games so often wears the players out and leaves less time for improvement, Glinz said.

Senior Courtney Birberick said, “The classes that I am in, especially my AP classes, have fallen very behind” in the curriculum. This means students have had to cram less into fewer days because the AP tests will take place in May regardless of how many snow days Southfield High School has.

Senior Austin Willis said the snow days caught him off guard and he did not have books at home to complete his schoolwork. Due to the unexpected days off from school, he says he was unable to retrieve his textbooks from his locker.

Head Custodian Keith Robertson said the cold weather caused some school pipes to freeze, which resulted in numerous water leaks that had to be repaired quickly.
