Southfield High Goes Wireless

Southfield High went wireless in mid-October, giving students and staff new abilities to get their work done, said Wes Prescott, Technology Coordinator for Southfield Public Schools.

Parts of Southfield High already were hot spots, Prescott said, but now the whole school has faster, more widespread wireless capabilities.

Senior Jalen Smith, who brings his laptop to school every day, says he loves that he can now access the Internet without difficulty.

English teacher Karen Melton said the new wireless access has changed how she enters grades and conducts parent-teacher conferences. “I can bring in my own laptop and move around the room” to enter homework grades. At conferences, she was able to open up her electronic gradebook and show parents what their student had done for her class.

“The Wifi still has a few bugs to be fixed,” Prescott said.
