Power Outage Strikes School

By Diante Adams

Southfield High experienced a power outage the evening of Sept 9.

When students returned to school the following morning, they walked into dark hallways and classrooms to start their day.

Students sat in their classrooms with no lights for approximately three hours while teachers attempted to teach with only window light.

Humorous as it may sound to some, it was an inconvenience to both students and staff.

Tiffany Harris, a junior, said, “I was disappointed because it impaired our learning for the day. We all could have been at home.”

DTE fixed the problem approximately two hours later.

Senior Courtney Birberick said, “It felt like we were having a lockdown drill.”

Assistant Principal Vernon Burden said he was unclear with what exactly happened. The cause could have been that the power lines were down and trees fell behind the football field, he said.

The power outage wasn’t a full black out because in some classrooms lights were still on and working. Thanks to the schools back generator, some classrooms still could have light without using the sunlight from the windows.
