Board Announces Top Choices for New School Name
Southfield’s newly merged high school will either be called Southfield Central or Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology, according to an announcement made today by School Principal Sonia Jackson.
The mascot will either be the Bulls or the Warriors, and the school colors will either be black, gold and gray or red, white and blue.
“I am alright with Southfield Central, but I already know it’s going to be Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology,” said Dylan Barnes, a sophomore.
“What I actually voted for made it into the results,” said junior Brenden Tidwells, who voted for Southfield Central, the Bulls and the colors red, white and blue.
“I am not concerned about the mascots, but I do care about the school name,” said Keturah Davis, a sophomore. She said she liked both of the final name choices because they represent unity.
The Board of Education asked students in grades 9 to 11 to vote on their favorite school name, mascot and colors in a Scantron election held last week. Seniors were not allowed to vote because they are graduating.
The Board is scheduled to announce their final selection based on the students’ preferences at their Board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Due to declining enrollment, Southfield High School and Southfield-Lathrup High School are scheduled to combine into one unified high school by the fall of 2016. The unified school is scheduled to open inside Southfield High School’s campus.
Names that did not make the cut included United Southfield High School and Southfield United High School.

I hope the students will be happy of the outcome.

This (vote) was rigged from the start. You should do what’s in popular demand of the patrons, not what’s easier.

Happy that the underclassmen get to vote. Upset about the senior class not having a day as as alumni. ?

I’m happy the students had input on what the school name should be along with the color and mascot.

I am excited that the schools are uniting and that two strong names have been selected to represent the school as one. However one thing I can definitely hear the students saying is Warriors come out and play lol I’m over 40 that’s from a classic film. On a serious note I know mascots are not as important as the actual school name but the way the Golden State Warriors have been winning why not roll with the name and mascot that depicts what these students have and that’s a winning attitude towards a better education and future.

I hope that whatever the students want will be reflected fairly and it looks like that will happen. Since my grandson Khalil Johnson still attends, I want the name, colors and mascot to reflect all that he would be privileged to represent. I purposely didn’t ask him what he voted for so that I could leave a non biased comment. I like the Warriors as mascot, Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology and red white and blue as the colors. I’ll tease my grandson later and tell him that if it was called Southfield Central and the colors were blue and white it would be very close to my old Alma mater Central High School in Detroit for laughs. Nevertheless I’m sure he will represent it well in his last two years because he has been a true blue student who holds his school and what it represents in high esteem. I know he loves it there and is involved. Go SOUTHFIELD !!!

Glad to see that the board let the students choose the school name, mascot, and colors. Hopefully the merge between the two schools will be a smooth transition for all students.
