Peace Walk To Honor Martin Luther King

The public is invited to attend the 30th annual Peace Walk Celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday, Jan. 19.

The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, at 26275 Northwestern Highway, in Southfield.  It ends at the Southfield Pavilion , 26000 Evergreen Road.

A program is scheduled for 11 a.m. At the Pavilion, following the walk.

The walk commemorates the life of peace activist King, who advocated unity, non-violence and justice.

Southfield High senior Tailar  White says, “I’m attending the walk for those who walked for us. I have a strong passion for Black history. I know it will mean a lot to my grandparents.”

School security guard Gary Bickley says, “It’s important for students to attend because it’s a major part of our history as African Americans. Most of us were not around to take part in the Civil Rights Movement.”   Bickley says participating in the walk gives youth a chance to pay tribute to those who actually took part in the struggle for freedom.
