Southfield High Launches New Cheer Squad

Southfield High has launched a new Competitive Cheerleading squad. This is the first time since 2004 that Southfield High School has had a competitive cheer team that aims to participate in competitions, Varsity Cheer Coach Janice Thomas.
“The girls this season are the best that I’ve seen try out in all of my years of being here,” says senior and Varsity cheerleader, Kaleb Baker, who has been cheering for SHS for four years.
Along with regular cheer practice during the week, the competitive cheer squad will have tumbling days, stunt clinics and extended practice hours to prepare them for upcoming competitions.
“It’s more dedication and time required from the girls,” said Coach Janice Thomas.
The squad has six competitions lined up for this year, beginning in January, Thomas said.
To compete, the girls will have to complete fundraising to pay for the expenses, Thomas said.
Southfield High has numerous trophies displayed throughout the school from basketball, football and track. “We need some cheer trophies up in this school,” said Thomas.
