Prom Date, A Necessity or an Option
Is It Necessary to Have A Prom Date? Controversy brews as students question the necessity of a prom date; should the tradition
be left behind or kept alive? Prom season is here, and high school students are getting excited about the big event.
One question that has been on the minds of many is whether it is necessary to have a prom date
to attend.
While traditionally, students have attended prom with a date, this however, is not a requirement,
as more and more students are choosing to attend without a prom date.
According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Secondary School
Principals, only 35% of students attending prom have a date. This shows that the majority of
students are attending their prom solo or with a group of friends.
When asked about the importance of having a prom date, Kenyatta Thompson, a high
school senior at SHSA&T, said, “I think it’s a personal choice. Some people prefer to have a date, while
others are more comfortable going with friends. As long as you’re having a good time, that’s
what matters.”
In addition to personal preference, some students may not have a significant other or may
not feel comfortable asking someone to prom. In these cases, going with a group of friends or
even going alone can be a great option.
School administrators also support the idea of attending prom without a date. It seems
they want all students to feel included and have a good time at prom. Afterall, it’s not about having a date,
but rather about celebrating the end of the school year with your peers.
Another benefit of attending prom without a date is having the freedom to enjoy the night
without the pressure of impressing someone or worrying about their expectations.
Students can dance, socialize, and have a good time without any added stress.
In conclusion, while having a prom date is a tradition, it is not a necessity. More and
more students are choosing to attend prom without a date, and school administrators support of this trend.
Whether attending solo or with friends, the most important thing is to
have a good time and create lasting memories of the high school experience.
