After a disappointing 1-1 start for both teams, the new-look Southfield A&T Varsity Football team played the Bloomfield Hills Blackhawks in its home opener. The Warriors started strong with a touchdown in the opening drive and remained strong throughout the half. Heading into halftime, the Warriors had shut out the Blackhawks, exiting the half with a 16-0 lead.

“Our defense came out with great authority, and having had help from Bloomfield dropping a well-called screen pass,” said Senior Leon Franklin after the game. Southfield remained effective in the second half despite conceding an early touchdown.

The Warriors went on to score on their next four possessions. The run game was efficient, with the “three headed monster” of D’Anthony Robinson, Leon Franklin, and Anwar Jackson leading the charge, forcing the 44-6 win. Senior Running Back D’Anthony Robinson is quoted saying that the Southfield O-line “Got the job done, [the O-line is] the reason we do what we do”. On his dominant performance (including the opening touchdown)

D’Anthony stated,  Being a big back, it’s like first you see the hole, then it’s like I got to get to it. Once I get there, it’s don’t get caught.”  Speaking about the team’s future, Senior Saunders Carter said that he feels “Everyone is hungrier now.  Last year was a learning experience.  We have a different mindset this year, to be honest.”

Leon agreed, then added,  “As a team, we just need to mentally lock in, to keep our composure in adversity.” The Warriors play their next home game against Clarkston on Friday the 22nd.
