Senior Caliph Thomas has no doubt who he will be spending Valentine’s Day with this year. He and his high school sweetheart, Nodja Mosley, plan to dine at their favorite Italian restaurant, Carrabas, in Novi, then go home for some quality time to exchange gifts.
Three years ago, who would have known that the two seniors would be the power couple of Southfield High School? Some even call them the Barack and Michelle Obama of the school.
Not only is Nodja the senior class president and the Homecoming Queen, but she is also a member of Southfield Student Congress, the Principal’s Council, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team and the cheerleading squad.
Thomas is the Homecoming King and the captain of the Boys Varsity Football team and serves on the Senior Class Board.
If you pay close attention, you’ll even notice that their outfits match most days.
Mosely recalls that the two met as sophomores in the halls of Southfield High when Thomas had a bag of Gummi Worms and offered some to Mosley. It was love at first bite.
Thomas jokes, “You can describe us as the Ying and Yang because I am the nice one, and she is the mean one.”
Mosley said, “It was second hand nature to keep a successful relationship because we are still best friends.”
Back in 2009, history and English teacher Beverly Hicks envisioned the couple being together “from the way he handled her,” Hicks says.
Thomas and Mosley say they would like to transition from Homecoming king and queen to Prom king and queen this spring.
As the school year approaches a close, many wonder how the two will last if they attend different colleges. Thomas says he wants to study pharmacy at Wayne State University, and Mosley wants to study a pre-med curriculum at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
But Mosley says she is considering staying in Michigan to attend Wayne State with Thomas.
