Neckties are the new rule in football this year.
Head coach Timothy Conley says, “No tie, no game.”
This means players must attend school in a shirt and special football tie the day before each game.
The new tradition is designed to unite their team and increase awareness of upcoming games, Conley says.
Players purchased the customized navy blue and white striped ties this year for $28 and they are now considered a part of the team’s uniform. The ties have a large “S” on the bottom for “Southfield” and say “football” in smaller letters on the white stripes.
Coach Conley says the ties represent a “discipline in dress code” and are a way to “showcase the team.” He says he hopes that discipline will transfer to the football field, as well.
Junior Brandon Bean, who plays for varsity, says he loves the ties, which he says not only look crispy, but also showcase team spirit.
“The ties are a great way to express the professionalism in the sport of football,” says senior Emmanuel Perry, who is a football fan. He says the ties are a great way for the team to step up their game.
It’s not just the football team wearing ties, it’s coaches too.
Conley says student reaction to the ties has been overwhelmingly positive.
