For the first time ever, Southfield High will offer online classes to students in the fall.
Spanish, French, Geometry and Creative Writing are four of the courses that will be offered online, beginning next year, according to course selection sheets distributed to students.
The inclusion of numerous online classes was a surprise not only to registering students but to teachers, as well.
Spanish instructor Carla J. Ware-Parker says, “Online courses could be great for strong, motivated, and independent students, as long as support is there if and when needed.”
Sophomore Marcus Davis says, “I think taking Spanish online might be a good way to learn because it’s different and catches my attention. It’s better than reading out of a book or taking notes in a classroom.”
Davis signed up to take an online Spanish class next year.
Others are curious about how a foreign language class would be effectively taught online when language classes often require a lot of solid foundation and personal one-on-one practice between the instructor and student.
Davis says one of the big question marks about the online classes is how students will adapt to the learning environment.
