“One in the door!”
That’s what customers hear from the staff when they set foot inside the new Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant on Greenfield in Southfield.
The Virginia-based chain has its headquarters in Lorton, Va. The restaurant has been in business for 23 years and has more than 300 locations in 29 states.
The restaurant has a unique atmosphere created partly by large sacks of Idaho potatoes along the walls and boxes of peanuts that customers can snack on while waiting in line or waiting at their tables for their food to arrive.
The restaurant boasts many awards and positive reviews on its walls. Some of the awards that stood out most to me were the five best burger awards received from publications around the country. Washington Magazine, AOL City Guide, South Tampa News, Independent Weekly and Delaware Today Magazine all hailed the Five Guys burger as the best. Their fries were also voted the best by Capital Region Living Magazine.
The menu at Five Guys has nothing but burgers, fries and hot dogs. A hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon burger and bacon cheeseburger can be ordered as singles or a double burgers.
There are 15 toppings, such as mayonaise and grilled mushrooms that can be added to burger orders at no additional cost, but must be requested.
Their four types of hot dogs are available with the same 15 optional toppings. Their famous fries come in the Five Guys style or the spicy Cajun style.
When I visited Five Guys I ordered the most expensive item on the menu, the double bacon burger which cost $4.89 (or $5.39 with cheese) and the large fries (3.99). It took less than 10 minutes for my order to be completed, and I enjoyed every bit of it. The burger had two juicy, delicious, never frozen patties on it that were both cooked to perfection.
The crisp lettuce and tomatoes on the burger tasted as if they had been harvested seconds before they were placed on my burger, and the tasty barbecue sauce left my mouth watering for more.
The famous fries lived up to their reputation and will probably be the best tasting fries you’ll ever have. They don’t have the infamous greasy fast food taste to them. They are fried in 100 percent peanut oil and taste more like homemade French fries that are salted perfectly.
Unfortunately if you’re looking for a milkshake or some type of dessert to round out your meal, you will have to venture elsewhere.
