The Turbo Jays won second place in the Innovative Vehicle Design competition held recently in Farmington and Detroit.
The 22-member crew built an electric car after school and competed with 12 other schools from Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Their performance ranking was determined by how far the vehicle traveled in one hour, said Turbo Jay sponsor Joseph Minnick.
Senior Justin Latham drove the car during the competition.
The purpose of building the car was to create the most fuel-efficient vehicle and to work with mentor engineers and teachers to solve a real-world problem, said Minnick.
Eaton Corporation of Southfield sponsors the Turbo Jays.
