The undefeated Boy’s track team is cruising along with its winning 9-0 record.
“We gotta bust our butts to win the state championship,” said track team junior Jerome Delk, a sprinter for the team. “The team has heart and the desire to win.”
“We have a strong team, and we have what it takes to win anything we put our minds to,” said junior Fabian McIntosh, who recently broke the Oakland County indoor 4 X 4 record.
McIntosh says that their coach, William Howard, puts a lot of pressure on them to be the best and the pressure has worked to their advantage this year. He also schedules long and frequent practices.
Last year the Boys’ Track Team finished first in the league, city, and the county. They placed second at regionals, then lost to Detroit Mumford High School at States.
One of the team’s strongest components is its 4 X 400 relay team of senior Phillip Burkes, juniors Ross Weaver and Fabian McIntosh, and sophomore Derrick Hunter. They also have a returning champion in junior Gerald Gersham.
As for the Girls’ track team, they won regionals and county championships last year but have a struggling 3-6 record so far this year. “We had a rocky start and have also had a lot of injured people,” said junior long jumper Angela Norman. “In spite of that, we stay focused.”
