Students can expect to see the school’s front lawn filled with portable classrooms or trailers in the fall.
That’s because construction of the first phase of Southfield High School’s $30 million renovation is finally set to begin.
The old B House wing will be the first to go, so those classes will be moved to air-conditioned portables with bathrooms.
The two companies working on the school are Integrated Design Solutions, and Barton Marlow, which is a Southfield-based company that specializes in public education projects.
Project manager of Barton Marlow Beth Yorke said that the largest portion of the bond that passed last year was given to Southfield High School, and that the three-year renovation work on the school will consist of four phases. The first phase will involve building a new Instructional Technology Center and boiler room.
In phase two a new classroom wing will be built in the open land behind A and B houses.
Phase three includes a new athletic wing with a new gym, weight room and elevated track. The present gym will remain for extra use.
The final stage involves tearing down parts of O house, air conditioning the auditorium, updating current classrooms and moving the main office near the library.
