Though he is only a sophomore, wrestler Dwight James has placed in every wrestling tournament since the season started this year.
He has an individual wrestling record of 11-5, which has contributed, to his team’s record of 9-8.
“I’m looking forward to bringing home a gold medal,” James said. This would only add to his personal collection of previously won medals over the season. His greatest victory, he says, was pinning one of his opponents in less than 70 seconds.
To stay in shape, 189-pound James plays football at the beginning of the year, then moves on to wrestling. In the spring he will throw the shot put for the track team.
James comes from a Guyanese background, which, he says, contributes to his disciplined attitude. James describes himself as a “focused” athlete with a lot of heart.
After high school James plans on attending college and has hopes to play college football while studying law.
Junior wrestling manager Kyla Smith says, “Dwight is a pretty good wrestler. His skills are really improving.”
Wrestling Coach Tim Conley says, “James has a lot of confidence. He believes he can win.” Coach Conley goes on to say that these qualities are imperative “because wrestling is an individual sport, and you have to have arrogance.”
James hopes to continue his winning streak in the wrestling team’s upcoming events, which include meets on Feb. 13 against Ferndale High, and districts on Feb. 18 and 21.
