The North American International Auto Show has jump-started the interests of dozens of Southfield High School students. Approximately 808,833 people attended at Cobo Hall for this 10-day event, including many from Southfield High.
Senior Brandon Threets said, “My favorite car was the Maybach Benz. It’s honestly the coolest car out for now.” This concept vehicle is built on a 139-inch wheelbase and is 227.2 inches long. The Maybach Benz is equipped with a LDC- screen television, three telephones, a bar, and reclining rear seats.
Freshman Jonathan Blakely agreed by saying, “My favorite car is the new Benz. That junk is cold.”
Junior Kyla Smith said, “I like the new Hummer, which is smaller than the earlier Hummers. Since I’m short, I like bigger cars.” The 2004 model weighs 4600 pounds and is 174.901 inches long. It is also turbocharged with five cylinders.
At the show were many celebrities as well. Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm as well as Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick attended to support this Michigan event.
Players from the Detroit Lions, the Pistons and the Red Wings showed up as well to view the debut of the newest models.
Other notables such as singer Celine Dion made appearances at the annual blacktie fundraiser as well.
