Many people might think that the United States isn’t ready for a woman president. They also might think that a woman president wouldn’t be able to survive under the pressures meant for strong male shoulders. Well, those people better look out because Democrat Carol Moseley Braun is in the presidential race and deserves the Democratic nomination.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with 56-year-old’s outstanding political career, the African-American trail blazer has served as a United States Senator (1992-98), U.S. Ambassador (1999-2001), County Executive Officer, State Representative, and Assistant United States Attorney. She obviously not only knows her way with people, but knows her way around the political wind mill.
Braun would make a fantastic president and not just because it’s about time we had a woman president. She should be elected because she has a strong background in politics. If any man had had the same background, he would be a sure win for the Democratic nomination. Her stands on issues are clear and concise. She doesn’t change her stand to win votes.
She is not a pushover, which is one of the most important qualities a president could have. She is also not afraid of going against her party. In 1978, she successfully sued her own party and the state of Illinois in the landmark case of Crosby vs. State Board of Election in order win fair reapportionment for African American and Hispanic citizens.
Braun was the first female senator from Illinois, the first female African-American senator, and the first African-American Democratic senator. And it appears she wants to be not only the first woman president, but also the first African-American president.
With all these things to recommend her, Braun is a strong candidate for president. The U.S. is always talking about equal rights and equal opportunity. Well, it’s time the U.S. stopped preaching about it. We need to practice what we preach. It’s time for a woman to run things.
