Science teacher James Bugg is showing why he was named Teacher of the Year last year.
His Criminal Science classes are studying the mummification process that dates back 6,000 years. To teach students the process, he’s having them dehydrate chicken legs in a mixture of salts that will later resemble the form of mummies.
“This is a fun and meaningful activity before Halloween, and every class is enjoying it,” said Bugg, who showed a video on ancient Egyptian times and the mummification process before conducting the chicken bone experiment.
“This is one class I enjoy coming to,” said junior Derrick Jenkins. “The experiments get us into science.”
Junior Tiffany Mitchell-Hines was a harder sell. “At first I really didn’t want to do this experiment, but after I watched the video, it really changed my mind.”
Bugg says the lesson is his way to help students grasp the concepts of diffusion, experimental design, ratios and proportions.
