A few weeks into the school year all the school’s sports teams were winless until the girls’ Varsity Tennis Team came through with a strong win against Clawson on Sept. 11. That win made them the only team in the entire school with a win at that point.
The wins didn’t stop there for the Lady Jays because they came from a 1-1-4 record at the beginning of the season to a 6-2-7 finish overall.
“We could have won more matches, but the overall season was very fun,” said Lauren Smith, who was the only team member to make All-League and to advance to the semi finals of the Regionals Tournament.
Originally, Head Coach Ernie Taber thought it was going to be a rebuilding season for his team. But it turned out to be a decent one, he said.
Though Smith will graduate this year, Taber will have Co-captain Kelli Copeland, a sophomore, as a returning player next year.
In their division, the Lady Jays finished fifth out of eight teams, which was the same as last year. “The Tennis team will be better next year because they will have more experience playing the game,” says Smith.
