Henry “Hank” Moulder, Jr., a popular coach and Civics teacher, died unexpectedly Oct. 19, at his Southfield home. He was 33.
Moulder was a Southfield High Blue Jay who graduated in 1988 and came back to teach at his alma mater in 1995.
“He had a record for most dedicated to serve SHS,” said tearful Assistant Principal Marty Bulger. “He taught kids how to lead.”
Moulder coached three sports last year. He was the head coach of Freshman Football, an assistant basketball coach, and the head coach of Boys’ Varsity Baseball.
Moulder fought a long battle with kidney disease and underwent two kidney transplants in recent years. Despite his health conditions, he sponsored Southfield Student Congress and led a flurry of Homecoming festivities the week before he died.
Moulder once told The Jay, “Returning to Southfield was the best thing I ever did.” He was a proud alumnus whose legacy to Southfield High includes the establishment of an alumni organization that welcomed alumni back to the school during Homecoming week.
The raspy-voiced teacher played football for Kansas State University and was a football star at Southfield High in the ‘80s.
As a receiver on the football team, he set a Blue Jay record for the most receptions. But now he holds the third place record.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda, parents Hank Sr., and Sharon, younger brother, David, and more than 1,700 students and staff who mourn his loss.
