A sad event occurred in United States education this year as New York opened a government-funded public school for gay, bi-sexual and transgender students.
This is disturbing. It’s also an utter waste of valuable money. It is unnecessary to create a separate school for alternative lifestyle students and will do nothing but enhance segregation.
The Harvey Milk High School was created to protect the feelings of the teens who choose to lead alternative lifestyles. It will supposedly protect the teens from being tormented by society by creating a school environment where alternative lifestyles are welcomed and understood.
The founders of the school say that the students will receive a better education at this school.
But creating a separate high school for those who are different is another form of segregation. It goes against the values of our society that embrace inclusion of all people, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, or sexual preference.
Blacks were segregated from society at one time, too, until our nation realized it was morally wrong and unfair to segregate people according to race. Now New York is regrettably turning back the hands of time and segregating according to sexual preference.
New York’s conservative party chairman, Mike Long, raised a good point when he asked, “Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong. Maybe we should have a school for chubby kids who get picked on.”
All in all, the purpose for the school is misguided. It contradicts society’s belief that people should be tolerant of differences and embrace diversity.
Instead of wasting taxpayer dollars on Harvey Milk High School, New York should be using the money to enhance the schools it already has.
