The race for California governor has been different from any other. Several celebrities as well as politicians with strange pasts may be included in this year’s ballot, making a mockery of the sacred tradition of electing a governor.
Due to the upcoming recall vote of Gov. Gray Davis, two candidates unfortunately have become extremely popular among voters: Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a fall-back Democratic candidate. They are among 135 candidates campaigning for Davis’ job.
By unofficial polls, Bustamante was found to be the most popular among Latinos because of his Hispanic background, but not for any substantial issue-related reasons. Schwarzenegger is more popular among other races and groups probably because he is a celebrity, which is an even more superficial reason.
The truth is that neither Schwarzenegger nor Bustamante should run for governor. Bustamante wants to raise taxes. This will make it harder for businesses and people to survive. And let’s not forget his racial slur, when he ignorantly said “nigger” instead of “negro” at a black union movement.
Schwarzenegger, on the other hand, responds clumsily to questions. His inability to give public speeches could bring up potential problems for the state. Celebrities and politicians have praised Schwarzenegger in his new political career. Yet, his reputation has been damaged by rumors of orgies and a Nazi father.
In all, neither should run for governor. Neither candidate seems to be able to solve California’s problems. The limelight has spoiled Schwarzenegger, and Bustamante is simply uneducated in areas other than those of his own ethnic group.
