NHS Inducts 35 New Members

Thirty-five new members were inducted last week into Southfield High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).

Southfield Mayor Kenson Siver spoke to the new members, encouraging them to use their intelligence to vote when they become 18 years old.

Also in attendance were family members who came to witness the induction ceremony.

“My daughter wanted to be a part of NHS very badly, and I am happy for her becoming a new member of National Honor Society,” said Tamika Scott, mother of sophomore Ebony Scott.

Senior Paige O’Neal was among the inductees. “It is a great opportunity,” said O’Neal. “I missed out on it last year, but I made sure I was on top of my game this year.”

The National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students who excel in four areas: scholarship, leadership, service and character. To continue in NHS, members have to maintain a 3.25 grade point average, assist in three tutoring sessions per semester and complete eight hours of volunteer work per semester, said NHS adviser Bruce Shepard.

Shepard said that when Southfield High merges with Southfield-Lathrup next year, the chapter will continue “and probably be bigger.”
