Senior Lauren Williams offers up her arm so that a Red Cross nurse can select a good vein for giving blood.

Thirty-Five pints of blood were collected in the blood drive co-sponsored Friday by the Southfield Student Congress and the American Red Cross.

That’s the word from SSC Adviser Andy Green.

Of those who donated, 33 were students and two were teachers, Green said.

Green said he was satisfied with the blood drive results. “Our goal was 30 (pints),” Green said. “We met our goal. We saved 105 lives.”

Senior Kaleb Baker, who is a member of SSC and helped organize the drive, said, “A lot of people committed to donate, and they did, and I am very happy about that.”

Twenty-two others tried to give but were turned away because they did not meet the criteria. Either they did not weigh at least 110 pounds, or their iron was too low, or the Red Cross nurses found another reason why they could not give.

Those who were turned away can give next time, Green said. The SSC sponsors two blood drives each school year.
