Kitchen Fire Causes Alarm
The school’s monthly safety drills paid off on October 28.
That’s the day an actual fire in the school’s cafeteria kitchen during first lunch caused students to evacuate the building.
Security guard Andrew Hage said, “The fire was huge, and it took fire fighters 10 minutes to put it out .”
No one was injured from the fire, said Assistant Principal Sonia Jackson.
Afterward, students in classrooms near the kitchen returned to a smoky-scented fifth hour.
The fire started when a kitchen bulb burned out, said Jackson.
Senior Jeremy Gates said, “While I was getting my lunch, I smelled the smoke. It was cool how we all knew what to do and how to leave the building in an orderly fashion without staff members to help us out.”

I didn’t think there was really a fire! I thought the smoke detectors were messing up.
