Business teacher Erin McBrien says she does not approve of students who sell candy, pop or chips out of their backpacks in school, but she offers these 10 tips to start a successful business:

1. Research your market: Who are your customers, what do they like, and how much money do they have to spend?

2. Find a partner: Two heads are better than one. You can divide responsibilites and work smarter, not harder.

3. Find good products: Check around to find the best quality product at the best price.

4. Survey future customers: What would new customers prefer? Ask them.

5. Pick your location: Figure out where you will locate your business. Do you need to be near the customer, or will your customer come to you?

6. Have a business plan: Instead of approaching your business day by day, create a timeline and set goals for achieving your business plans.

7. Find investors: If you do not have the money to start your business, find someone who does.

8. Take a business/ marketing class. You can learn from others.

9. Create a Website: This is an inexpensive way to reach many.

10.Read about others who started businesses. Learn from their successes and failures.
