Malaya Watson Makes ‘American Idol’ Top 8

Southfield High junior Malaya Tina Watson survived another elimination round on “American Idol XIII” and is now among the top eight singing contestants in the nation.

Watson sang the classic  “The Long and Winding Road” by the Beatles and earned herself enough votes from viewers to keep her in the running for at least another week.

Southfield High junior Kaleb Baker said, “The song brings out how powerful Malaya’s voice truly is.”
The tender song is different from what Watson usually sings, because it is a slower selection, but Judge Jennifer Lopez for the third week straight said she “loved” Watson’s performance and that it again gave her “goosies.”
Watson’s friend and fellow marching band member Kraig O’Neal said, “That is very exciting to see Malaya make it to the top 8, and I hope to see her be American Idol 2014.”

Also surviving this week’s elimination round was North Farmington High School senior Jena Asciutto, also from Michigan.
