Math teachers give the most homework, according to a student survey conducted by The Southfield Times.
Math teacher Karla Crum was identified as the teacher who gives the most homework, according to a survey of 132 Southfield A & T students across grades 9-12.
The survey included 39 freshmen, 31 sophomores, 34 juniors and 28 seniors.
One respondent wrote, “We get homework every day, even on weekends,” from Crum.
Crum, who was named by 26 respondents, said she is “proud” of being selected the teacher who gives the most homework. “Students have to work on what they really want to do, and they have to get better at it every day, so that’s why I give homework out.”
The next two teachers who got the most mentions were also math teachers. Steven Sharp received 18 mentions, and math teacher Nic Hamilton received 14 mentions.
Of Hamilton, one freshman wrote, “He gives us something every day to exercise our brain.”
Another wrote of Hamilton, “Sometimes he gives us three homework assignments at a time.”
Of Sharp one wrote, “He gives a worksheet every day.”
Not far behind the math teachers was Biology teacher Jason Solomon, with 13 mentions and Physics teacher David Consiglio, who received 12 mentions.
Solomon said he gives students homework because ”It is important for students to concentrate and stay focused.”
The “10-minute rule” is the homework standard endorsed by the National Education Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association. It recommends 10 minutes of homework per grade level per night. That would mean 10 minutes of homework for first-graders and 120 total minutes for seniors per night.
