The new trend called Silly Bandz is all in the wrist.
People of all ages are wearing the bright, fun-shaped, colorful silicone bracelets that come in shapes of animals, numbers, letters and even popular cartoon characters. That’s what makes them unique.
At first glance, the rubber band bracelets appear to be regular bracelets, but when they are off the wrist, it’s easy to see their amusing shapes.
At prices ranging from $1 to $5 for a 24-pack of bracelets, these bands are becoming a popular item among collectors.
Senior Kellie Littlejohn says she owns 74 Silly Bandz in a variety of shapes. Littlejohn says, “I love my Silly Bandz. It’s like I’m obsessed with them.”
Whether they’re for collecting, wearing or trading, Silly Bandz is one trend that is rapidly growing in popularity.
Sales Associate Charlene Mahoney, who works at Silly Bandz City in Twelve Oaks Mall, says, “I really like them and think they’re cool .” According to Mahoney, mostly children buy them, but many teens wear them, as well.
Senior Shanavia Thomas can also be found in the halls of Southfield High with several Silly Bandz upon her wrist. “I love Silly Bandz because of the bright colors. I dress in many bright colors, so Silly Bandz fit right in with my sense of style,” Thomas says.
Technology teacher Erin McBrien says her 11-year-old daughter, Claire, is also a big fan of Silly Bandz. According to McBrien, the pre-teen owns about 30 Silly Bandz. “I think they are very cute,” McBrien says. “I wish I would have come up with the idea for them; I’d be rich.”
