Jay Wins Writing, Art, Photo Awards

Two Southfield Jay staff members received national awards in the 2016 Quill and Scroll International Writing and Photo Contest.
Staff artist Parrish Pearce won the Sweepstakes Award for his editorial cartoon about the impending merger of Southfield High School and Southfield-Lathrup High School. It featured a Lathrup Charger mascot looking at a Southfield Blue Jay bird house and asking, “How am I supposed to fit in there?”
Staff Writer Rachel Walker won a Quill and Scroll sports writing award for her story called “Almost Famous.” It was about the sister of a famous quarterback who plays for Michigan State University.
Walker said, “Winning this award proved that I am more than a photographer. I am also a writer.”
The Jay also won numerous awards from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) last month, including two first-place awards, two second-place awards and two third-place awards for journalism, as well as 11 honorable mentions.
The student-run news website southfieldtimes.org received a Gold Award from MIPA for overall journalistic excellence.
