Freshly painted walls and newly hung banners and plaques dress up the O House walls.

It has been 40 years since the band wing in “O House” has been remodeled, but it is finally happening.

The hallway and classrooms in the music wing are getting a paint job and a fresh look with plaques and awards hung neatly on the walls.

The updates are being completed with flood insurance money the school received after heavy rains damaged the school two years ago, said music teacher Chris Kuhn.

To beautify the freshly painted hallway, Kuhn and Marching Band Director David Miller requested maintenance workers to also hang 119 plaques that showcase the achievements of past and present Southfield High music students. The plaques hang over the orange and yellow hall lockers that Kuhn said he hopes will also get painted as part of the remodeling.

The plaques display the names of those who have won school music honors, such as the Band Captain award, Best Section, and The Louis Armstrong Award, throughout school history.

Marching band junior Miles Jones said, “Since the band students rarely use the lockers, the paint job (of the lockers) would really give the hallway a fresher look without spending money on new lockers.”
