Sophomore Karl Patrick, number 32, shows his aggressive playing style in a home game against Clarkston High School.

The  Boys Varsity Basketball team is advancing to the district championship game after soundly defeating Farmington High School 61-46 on March 11.

The district championship game is scheduled for Friday, March 13, at Renaissance High School, in Detroit, at 7 p.m.

The Southfield High School Blue Jays (12-10) will face off with the University of Detroit Jesuit High School (18-3). The teams have not yet played each other this season.

This will be the Blue Jays’ fourth time going to districts under head Coach Gary Teasley, who has won every appearance he has made in district championship games.

The team will be putting up a fight keeping that record with no losses at districts. The Blue Jays have a key opponent to lock in on U of D Junior Cassius Winston, who plays the point guard position.

Sophomore Blue Jay Karl Patrick, who plays the same position, will have to deal with a lot of Winston. Patrick said, “He’s the playmaker on the court, that one guy we will have to keep locked down in order to win.”

The Blue Jay team is full of fledglings. Only senior Isaiah Green has actually played in a district championship game. Teasley doesn’t let the team feel any pressure, saying, “It’s a game. I don’t see the reason to even talk about pressure.”

Teasley said he plans to get this victory by playing pressure defense. The Blue Jays are looked at as the underdogs, so they plan to come in very prepared, Teasley said,  knowing that defense is the way to win.
