Wrestling team Captain Jake Brock, (on one knee) practices a takedown on wrestling team alumnus Aaron Collins in preparation for State competition. The team co-captain is junior Max Doggett.

Three Southfield High wrestlers are competing today in individual state finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

That means they are among the best in the state in their respective weight classes.

Representing SHS at states are the following:

  • Senior Jake Brock, 160 pounds, whose record is 33-12
  • Junior Max Doggett, 189 pounds, whose record is 38-12
  • Senior Kemonte Simmons, 119 pounds, whose record is 22-2.

The competition begins at 1:45 p.m. with the Grand March of competitors, followed by the first round of match-ups, said Wrestling Coach Eric Moon.

Those who win, advance to the second day of competition, which is tomorrow.

Brock said he is focusing on his mindset to prepare for states. “I believe in my abilities. I am not necessarily focusing on my opponent, but focusing on what I do,” Brock said.

Team Co-Captain Doggett said he prepared by “building endurance and mental toughness. ” Doggett said he has also focused on staying healthy.

Simmons transferred to Southfield High from Hazel Park for the wrestling program and said he “had no doubt” he would make it to states.
