Students drifted into the auditorium last week for the annual “Lip It Up” contest, a purposely wacky lip-synching competition.
Drama teacher Brenda Perryman and the thespian troop members sponsored the show.
Numerous students competed for one of two prizes: First place was $50; second place was $25.
But this year two acts tied for first place.
Seniors DeAnne Whitfield and DeLorean Cotton, who performed as Nivea and R. Kelly, won for their lip-synch rendition of “Laundromat.”
They split the first-place booty with a trio of women who performed as TLC. They were senior Jacqueline Spencer and juniors Orna Jones and Shari Holly.
Second place went to junior Michael Varner for his animated Michael Jackson performance. Varner was a crowd favorite as he sang, danced and moonwalked his way into $25 for second place.
Other acts included students imitating recording artists MaryMary, Jennifer Lopez, Brandy and Monica and the late Aaliyah. Senior Sheena Terrell received resounding applause for her performance of Tamia’s “Love Me Now.”
The performers operated under technical difficulties that complicated the judging difficult. During the second act, the sound system malfunctioned and some acts had to be rescheduled for later in the show.
Host Clifton Ross III, a senior, stalled for time by taking song requests from the audience. Ticket were $3 in advance, $5 the door.
